Bucknell Volleyball Joins the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Oct. 16, 2008 LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Orange and Blue are going pink on Friday. Bucknell volleyball is hosting "Think Pink" Night on Oct. 17 as it takes on American at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym. The Bison encourage fans to wear pink to the match to support the fight against breast cancer. As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bison are joining the Side-Out Foundation and volleyball teams across the country to increase awareness and education about the disease as well as to raise funds to help find a cure. "Our young women were more than excited when the coaching staff mentioned the possibility of identifying one of our volleyball competitions as a `think pink' game this fall," said head coach Cindy Opalski. "We are committed to doing anything we can as a team to promote breast cancer awareness and support practical solutions for women and men with this dreaded disease." Bucknell is involving a number of groups in the evening's events, including Colleges Against Cancer, Relay for Life and Bucknell fraternities and sororities to "pack Davis Gym in pink." All fans in attendance will receive pink ribbons to further show their support. The Bison will also raffle two volleyballs for the cause. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women with the most common risk factors being sex, age, personal and family health history and breast cancer genes. The best available way to detect breast cancer early is through mammography screenings. For more information on breast cancer or how to help, visit the American Cancer Society at cancer.org or the Side-Out Foundation at side-out.org. Bucknell is 8-13 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison will follow up the contest with American by playing Navy at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Davis Gym.
