Bucknell Volleyball's Smith Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
Nov. 5, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lindsay Smith (Boulder, Colo./Monarch), a senior co-captain of the Bucknell volleyball team, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Smith, who has a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average as a neuroscience major, is the only Patriot League student-athlete to earn the honor. Off the court, Smith's success in the classroom has been extremely steady. In addition to majoring in neuroscience, she will graduate this spring with minors in religion and children's studies. Smith recorded the Bison's top GPA in 2006 then continued to succeed with a perfect 4.0 GPA last spring. As a result of her hard work, Smith has been honored with several selections to the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as membership in the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society. Following graduation, Smith plans to attend medical school and practice in a pediatric field. Smith's work and volunteer experience is as diverse as her studies. The Colorado native has spent time as counselor and traveling director for the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, served as a nutrition education specialist at the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission School and taken part in a medical shadowing program for clinical and surgical practices. She also has completed an orthopedic surgery externship, tutored children in reading and biology, and helped build houses in Mexico. On the court, the right side/middle hitter has been a key to the Bison's success while starting nine of her 18 matches. Her leadership off the bench and on the front line has helped her team maintain a steady course throughout matches. Smith's 15 total blocks this fall is a single-season high for the senior as are her five assists. Three of those blocks came earlier in the season against West Virginia, tying a career high for a single match.
In order to be considered for Academic All-America honors, a candidate must be at least a sophomore with a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or significant reserve on his/her team. Bucknell ranks fifth among all Division I institutions with 117 national Academic All-Americans. The Bucknell volleyball program has now had 20 All-District honorees since 1984. The Bison will be on the court this weekend, taking on Lehigh and Lafayette on the road in an effort to regain one of the Patriot League's tournament berths. Bucknell is currently fifth in the standings with an 8-14 record overall and 4-6 tally in the league. |
