Bucknell Volleyball Team To Face Army in Patriot League Tournament Semifinals
Nov. 18, 2004
Bucknell Tournament Press Notes (PDF) LEWISBURG, Pa. -- For the 14th time in 15 seasons in the Patriot League, the Bucknell volleyball team will be headed to the postseason when the Bison square off against Army in the tourney semifinals on Friday at 8 p.m. Bucknell (14-12, 8-6 PL) is seeded third at the Patriot League Tournament and will face the second-seeded Black Knights (17-8, 12-2) in the third match of the season between the two squads. Army won 3-0 at West Point on Oct. 16 and 3-2 in Lewisburg just last Friday. Top seed and tournament host American (21-5, 14-0) will face fourth-seeded Navy (21-8, 8-6) in the other semifinal on Friday at 6 p.m. The winners will play for the Patriot League championship on Saturday at 7 p.m. at American's Bender Arena. The championship match will be televised by College Sports Television (CSTV) and aired on a tape-delay basis on Sunday at 4 p.m. Bucknell clinched the third seed with a stirring comeback from a two-games-to-none deficit against Holy Cross in the regular-season finale last Saturday. Senior co-captain Jackie Leahy played a starring role in that match with a career-high 34 kills -- the most in the Patriot League this season -- and she has been Bucknell's go-to player on offense virtually all season. Fellow seniors Carolyn Dougherty and Chelsea Robertson are also key contributors. Dougherty, a co-captain and the starting libero, ranks second in the Patriot League in digs per game. Robertson, a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, starts at right-side hitter. Junior Jessica Le is having a very good season in her first go-around as the Bison's starting setter. She ranks second in the Patriot League in assists. Junior Becky Fisher and freshman Jenna Henderson will complement Leahy at outside hitter, while sophomores Amanda Grossmann and Jennie Smith anchor the middle. Bucknell has captured two Patriot League championships, those coming in 1998 and 2000. The league champion receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. American is considered the favorite heading into the tournament. The Eagles went 14-0 in PL play this season and have never lost a regualr season or postseason conference match (62-0) since joining the league in 2001. Bucknell split two matches with Navy this season and went 0-2 against American. Last season the Bison defeated Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals before falling to AU in the championship match.
