LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lindsay Smith (Boulder, Colo./Monarch) was named the Patriot League Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday. Smith, who has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.81, is the fifth Bison in program history to earn the award and the first since Shannon Walker in 2000.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor is the second academic award Smith has received this fall. The Colorado native was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team earlier this month. She was the only Patriot League volleyball athlete to receive the accolade this year.

Smith’s success during her four years at Bucknell has come both on and off the court. The right side/middle hitter will graduate this spring after completing a major in neuroscience and minors in religion and children’s studies. Smith helped her volleyball squad to the highest team GPA on campus in 2006 before continuing to excel in the classroom with a perfect 4.0 GPA last spring.

In addition to being name to the Academic All-District Team this fall, Smith has been selected to the Bucknell Dean’s List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll several times. She is also a member of the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society.

Smith has spent a great amount of time working in her community. Among her many activities, Smith has worked as a counselor and traveling director for the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, taught nutrition education at the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission School and participated in a medical shadowing program for clinical and surgical practices. She has also completed an orthopedic surgery externship, tutored children in reading and biology, and helped build houses in Mexico.

On the court, Smith’s team recognized her leadership abilities and elected her as a co-captain this year. She has been a key to the Bison’s success, starting 11 of 20 matches. Her leadership off the bench and on the front line has helped her team maintain a steady course throughout matches.

Smith recorded 18 total blocks in her final campaign in the Orange and Blue. That marks a single-season high for the senior, as does her five assists.

Smith joins four former Bison in Kathleen Sullivan (1991), Sarah Mesaros (1992), Katie Steele (1995) and Walker in holding the title of Patriot League Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. With Smith’s selection, Bucknell leads all schools with five volleyball winners.
