Bucknell Women's Water Polo Splits Games on Final Day of Triton Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Bucknell women's water polo team picked up its first win of the 2007 season Sunday with a 10-4 victory over Redlands, the top-ranked team in Division III, on the final day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Bison ended up placing 14th in the difficult 16-team field that featured 12 ranked teams after dropping an 11-5 decision to No. 19 Cal State Bakersfield later in the day.
Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) each scored four goals on the day, with Rozas scoring a career-high three times against Northridge and Gins netting two goals in each game.
Rozas led the way in the opener against Redlands, although Gins and Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) added two goals apiece to help lead eight Bison who found the back of the net. Rozas and Jensen also tallied one assist apiece.
Jensen also added three steals, while Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) recorded a team-high five as the Bison totaled a season-high 14 thefts.
The Bison (1-3) jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead and never looked back against Redlands. The five goals against Bakersfield were the next-highest total of the weekend for Bucknell.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made six saves against the Bulldogs, and added three more in the nightcap against the Roadrunners despite playing only the first half.
Against nationally ranked Cal State Bakersfield Bucknell fell behind 7-1 in the first half, but played the Matadors even in the second with each team netting four goals.
The Bison, who have played a program record three nationally ranked foes in their first four games, are schedule to take on three more ranked opponents at next weekend's Maryland Invitational.
