WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Bucknell women's water polo team got the 2001 season started on a strong note, picking up an 8-7 victory over rival George Washington on Saturday, February 10.

George Washington got off to a quick start, leading 5-1 after the first period. After the Bison settled down, the defense kicked in. The Orange and Blue limited the Colonials to just one goal in the second, and none in the third period, while scoring five of their own to tie the game at 6-6 entering the fourth.

After both teams scored once in the fourth frame, it looked like the game was headed to overtime knotted at 7-7. Senior co-captain Paige Cull (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) prevented that from happening, however, as she netted the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the contest. Sophomore goalie Lindsay Chesterfield (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was credited with the assist on the play.

Cull finished the game with three goals and six steals. Junior Brooke Rea (Canandaigua, N.Y./Lost Altos) also scored three times for the Bison, while junior Adrienne Schober (Houston, Texas/Clearlake) finished the game with two goals, one assist, and two steals. Chesterfield ended the contest with 10 saves, in addition to her one assist and one steal.

Bucknell is 1-0 and will be in action at Villanova on Saturday, February 17. The Bison face Villanova at 1:00 p.m. and take on George Washington in a rematch at 4:45 p.m.
