Strong First Half Helps Bucknell Women's Water Polo to 13-10 Victory Over Marist

PRINCETON, N.J. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) netted three goals apiece and Bucknell used a strong first half to defeat Marist 13-10 in women’s water polo action Sunday morning at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will wrap up their four-game weekend Sunday afternoon at 2:20 p.m. against Harvard. Bucknell, which is 2-1 this weekend with the three games being decided by a total of five goals, led 8-4 at halftime behind a five-goal second quarter. The Bison extended to a five-goal margin at the end of three quarters. Rowe, who registered nine points in two games on Saturday, posted a team-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Canonica also had a solid game with three goals and two assists, giving her eight goals on the weekend. Rowe and Canonica are now tied for the team lead with 33 points this season. Palencia, who posted four goals and had a six-point contest Saturday evening against Brown, added an assist to go along with her three goals. All three scores came in six-on-five situations. Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) recorded her first multiple-point game of the weekend with two goals and a pair of assists to go along with a team-high four ejections drawn, while freshman Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) totaled one goal, three steals and four sprints won. She has now claimed 29 of 40 sprints this season, placing her sixth on the program’s single-season list. Bucknell’s Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) saved 10 shots in goal, upping her season total to 58.
The Bison are now 4-0 this year, and 25-0 over the last two years, when netting at least 10 goals in a game. Bucknell (5-5) will go for its second two-game winning streak of the young season Sunday afternoon against Harvard.
