CLAREMONT, Calif. - Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored a total of 10 goals and four assists to lead the Bucknell women's water polo team to a pair of victories Sunday at the Claremont Convergence. The Bison, who have now won five straight games, defeated No. 20 Cal State Bakersfield 10-9 in the opener and followed that with a 10-8 overtime win over Whittier, the third-ranked team in Division III.

Bucknell, which improved to 17-6, completed the Claremont Convergence with a 4-0 record and posted a 6-1 mark on its seven-game swing to California. By defeating nationally ranked Cal State Bakersfield, the Bison finally toppled a ranked opponent for the first time this season. They had lost their first four games against ranked foes. Additionally, Bucknell is now one win shy of tying the 2001 Bison squad for the second-most wins in program history. Last year's team established the program standard with 23 victories.

The Bison needed to come from behind to upset Cal State Bakersfield in the first game. They trailed 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, but went on a 6-0 run in the second frame to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. Still clinging to a three-goal lead entering the fourth period, Bucknell was outscored 4-2 as it hung on for the one-goal victory.

Gins, who scored her 100th career goal in the nightcap against Whittier, led the offense with four goals and two assists. Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western), who had just 11 goals entering the contest, added a season-high three, while Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) contributed two. Despite not scoring a goal, Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was a major factor in the offense as she dished out four assists.

Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland), who made 10 saves in both games, has now stopped at least 10 shots in five of her last six games. She is up to 145 saves this season and 661 in her career.

In the second game Gins, who took over the team lead in goals and points from Rowe, who has been battling nagging injuries recently, continued her torrid offensive day with six more goals and two more assists. She has a team-high 53 goals and 76 points this season. The goal total is tied for eighth on the Bucknell single-season list, while her point total places her 10th on that list. It is the second time this season, and third in her career, she has registered six goals.

Whittier and Bucknell remained close the entire way. At the end of regulation the score was tied at 8-8. Neither team scored in the first three-minute overtime period, but in the second, Rowe tallied the go-ahead goal, her only score of the game, on a four-meter shot. Gins later added an insurance tally on a breakaway.

Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy), Jensen and Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) each scored a single goal during regulation to round out the offense for the Bison.

Bucknell, which was 4-for-9 in six-on-five opportunities in the first game, was 2-for-5 against Whittier.

The Bison will be idle next weekend as they prepare for the ECAC Championship, which will take place April 1-2 in College Park, Md.
