LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mandy Bynum made 13 saves and the Bucknell women's water polo team streaked to a 6-0 lead before holding on for an 8-5 victory over Wagner to claim fifth place at the ECAC Championships Sunday morning at Kinney Natatorium. The fifth-place showing equals the best-ever for the Bison who also took fifth in 1999.

Bynum led the stingy Bucknell defense that did not allow a goal until 5:13 remained in the third quarter. By that time the Bison had built a 6-0 lead as Meagan Gins scored all of her team-high three goals before the Seahawks got on the board. Meg Blitzer, Cody Keffer and Elizabeth Jensen each tallied one goal before a Wagner player could find the back of the net.

Jamie Fullen finally scored on a breakaway in the third quarter to cut the Bucknell lead to 6-1. Neither team scored again for more than six minutes until Keffer, who had three assists in the game, took a pass from Gins and scored with 6:04 left in the fourth quarter to extend the Bison lead to 7-1.

Bucknell had a chance to equal its record for fewest goals allowed in a game. Four times the Bison have allowed the opponent to score just once. However, Stacey Travous netted Wagner's second goal of the game with 4:33 left when she took one shot that bounced off the crossbar of the goal, gathered the rebound, and fired her next shot past Bynum.

The score remained 7-2 until Wagner poured in three goals in the final 1:42 as Bucknell was trying to kill the clock. Jessica Trimis was able to score Bucknell's eighth goal in the final minutes of play as the Bison coasted to their 17th victory of the season. That figure is one shy of tying the 2001 squad for the most in school history.

The Bison will return to the road next weekend when they face Salem International and Maryland in College Park, Md., Saturday, April 9. The games are slated for 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. starts. The following day Bucknell will play at George Washington at 11 a.m.
