No. 17 Hartwick Defeats Bucknell Women's Water Polo, 15-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) and Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored two goals apiece, but No. 17 and fifth-seeded Hartwick outscored Bucknell 8-2 in the first half and the Bison women’s water polo team fell to the Hawks by a 15-6 score Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Championship. The loss sent the eighth-seeded Bucknell to Sunday’s seventh-place game against Harvard. Start time is noon.
The Bison’s top three scorers entering the game – Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Taylor Barnett Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) and Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) – were held to one goal by Hartwick’s defense. Bucknell attempted just 19 shots in the contest.
Hartwick scored at least four goals in each of the first three periods and led by seven goals at the end of three quarters.
Smith added two steals in addition to her two goals, while Morgan drew a team-high three ejections. Bucknell registered 14 steals in the contest as Stephanie Ovalle (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick), Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Barnett and Tara Murao (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) also posted two steals apiece.
Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) got the start in goal and made two saves while playing the first half. Senior Brittany Connell (Montebello, Calif./Montebello) played the entire second half and stopped six shots.
Bucknell was 4-for-10 in six-on-five chances, while Hartwick converted 4 of 6.
The Bison will wrap up their 2012 campaign Sunday afternoon against Harvard. The Bison were 0-2 in two regular-season meetings against the Crimson. Bucknell will be aiming for its second consecutive seventh-place finish at the Eastern Championship.
