April 29, 2007
PRINCETON, N.J. - Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) scored three goals and Bucknell converted on five of eight man-up opportunities as the Bison women's water polo team closed the 2007 campaign Sunday morning with a 6-3 victory over Harvard in the seventh-place game at the Eastern Championship. The seventh-place finish equals the second-best showing in program history, matching the 2004 and 2005 squads. The win, which helped Bucknell finish the season 15-17, was the 150th in the nine-year history of the program. Gins led the Bison with three goals to end the season with 62, the fourth-best total in school history. She also has 180 career goals, which ranks second, and 249 career points, which stands fourth. Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) and Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) each added one goal to round out the Bison scoring. Jensen also contributed a team-high three assists to finish her career with 259 points, the second-best figure in program history. She also stands second on the career assist list with 125. Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) was solid in goal for Bucknell, which shut out Harvard in the first half en route to a 3-0 halftime advantage, with five saves. The all-time saves leader in Bison history, Bynum finished her four-year career with 963 stops, including 221 this year. The defense in front of Bynum was strong as Bucknell totaled 13 steals, including three apiece from Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western) and Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Rowe wrapped up the season with a team-high 51 steals.
The victory over the Crimson helped the Bison up their record against them this season to 2-0. Bucknell captured a tight 6-5 win at the ECAC Championship in early March. Sunday's contest marked the final games for Bucknell's six seniors as Sadie Abuhoff (Cranbury, N.J./Lawrenceville), Bynum, Jensen, Susan Kingerski (Sugarland, Texas/Saint Agnes Academy), Sullivan and Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) donned the Orange and Blue for the final time.
