LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's cross country team finished first in the annual Bison Open, placing three runners in the top five and 15 in the top 20 in the four-team event. Freshman Caitlin Cavanaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) finished second overall in the meet, recording the top time for the Bison in the three-mile event. Bucknell finished with a total score of 23, defeating Bloomsburg (44), Susquehanna (68) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (109).

Running the race through a steady mist, Bucknell paced itself early in the event, allowing three runners from Bloomsburg to set the early lead. The Bison were then stronger at the end of the meet, only unable to overtake Angela Borealo of Bloomsburg, who finished first overall with a time of 17 minutes, 25.83 seconds. Cavanaugh finished in 17:39.11, while Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) finished third overall (17:39.32), and Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) placed fifth (17:39.51).

Rounding out the top 10 for Bucknell were Gillian Nordquist (6th, 17:48.25) (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), Alexa Griffiths (7th, 17:48.85) (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua), Allison Donaghy (8th, 17:58.80) (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) and Samantha Bower (10th, 18:02.63) (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem).

"Our freshmen runners were not intimidated," Bison head coach Kevin Donner said. "We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores with great times out there."

Of the top 11 finishers for the Orange and Blue, nine were from the freshman and sophomore classes: Cavanaugh, Moniz, Fulmer, Griffiths, Donaghy, Bower, Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) and Kara Weichler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).

The Bison women return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 6, traveling to Northville, Mich., for the Detroit Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. ET.
