Bucknell Women's Cross Country Posts Second-Place Showing at Patriot League Championships
Oct. 30, 2010
EASTON, Pa. - Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) earned First Team All-Patriot League honors, and Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) added a second-team selection as Bucknell women's cross country placed second at the Patriot League Championships in Easton, Pa., on Saturday morning. The runner-up finish gave the Bison their sixth straight season of finishing in the top two at the league meet. Bucknell just missed claiming its second straight title as it placed second in the team standings to Colgate. The Bison tallied 64 points with the help of its three all-league selections, while the Raiders finished with 42 points. Colgate also led the field with four all-league honorees. Army took third as a squad with 93 points, Navy was fourth with 109 and Holy Cross took fifth with 120. Rounding out the team results were American in sixth, Lehigh in seventh and Lafayette in eighth. "Our women ran a solid race through our top five. Colgate ran a great race and deserves to win," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We're proud to have three all-conference runners in Stephanie Fulmer, Sarah Moniz and Alysha Hooper. Those three have been solid for us all year and deserve that honor."
Bucknell put all five runners in the top 20, led by Fulmer's sixth-place finish. It was the junior's second such placing in as many years as she was also sixth last fall. At the 2010 championship meet, Fulmer crossed the line in 20 minutes, 36 seconds.
After three years, Fulmer has three First Team All-Patriot League selections to her name. She is the first Bison to claim first-team honors three times since the league split its awards into first and second tiers in 2002. Also making a repeat appearance on the all-league list was Moniz, who finished just behind her teammate in seventh place with a time of 20:41. The senior also earned first-team accolades a year ago. Hooper was 14th overall in 21:16. The second team honors are the first of her career. Adding to Bucknell's score was senior Alaina Chodoff (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and sophomore Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). Chodoff was 18th overall (21:27), followed closely by Tolli in 19th (21:28). Tolli's strong finish came in her first career Patriot League meet. As a team, Bucknell has placed second or better at the Patriot League Championships in each of the last six meets and in 12 of the last 14. The Bison's worst finish during that stretch was a fourth-place showing in 2003 and 2004. The Orange and Blue also have eight team titles in program history, more than any other Patriot League school. Taking the individual title in Easton was Colgate's Elise DeRoo. The two-time champion DeRoo completed the course in 19:17, well ahead of her teammate, Chelsea Burns, who placed second with a time of 20:07. Bucknell will be back on the course on Nov. 13 when it competes at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Championships in University Park, Pa. Races at the Penn State Blue & White Golf Course begin at 10 a.m.
