Sept. 9, 2003

Lewisburg, Pa. - On the weight of her fourth-place finish overall at the University of Detroit-Mercy Invitational, tops among her teammates, freshman Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) received the Patriot League and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week awards for the week of Sept. 7.

In her first-ever race as a member of the Bucknell squad, Nastase became the first Bison to earn the league's Runner of the Week honor, either on the men's or the women's side, since Bucknell took both accolades on October 8, 2002. Theresa Dennis '03 and Bryan Johnston '03 were the winners that week. She is the first women's cross country athlete to win the ECAC award since Becki Marshall '02 won it three times in 2001.

The freshman was Bucknell's top runner in the University of Detroit-Mercy Invitational, held last Saturday in Northville, Mich. She led 14 of her teammates of all classes with a time of 18:58 in the 5,000-meter race. Bucknell won the event with 37 points, besting Wayne State's second by six points.
