Bucknell's Caitlin Cavanaugh Named Patriot League Female Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Sept. 9, 2008 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman runner Caitlin Cavanaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was named Patriot League Female Cross Country Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. Cavanaugh placed sixth in Saturday's 22nd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, finishing first for the Bison and helping the team to a second-place standing. Cavanaugh's time of 18 minutes, 15 seconds in the 5,000-meter meet was bested only by three runners from meet champion Michigan (individual champion Nicole Edwards, Geena Gall and Danielle Tauro), who finished 21st at last year's Division I NCAA Championships; two-time previous meet champion Rachelle Malette of Wayne State; and Hilary Esselstein of third-place Findlay. Cavanaugh has paced the Bison in both of their meets so far this year, finishing second overall at the three-mile Bison Open with a time of 17:39.11. She headlines a stellar freshman class for Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner, which also includes Allison Donaghy (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) and Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), who placed seventh and 10th, respectively, at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. During her senior year at Danville Area High School, Cavanaugh placed sixth in the 5,000-meter event at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PIAA) State Championships last November, and fourth at the PIAA Track & Field State Championships in the 3,200 meters in May. She also finished 10th at the 2008 Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association (PTFCA) Indoor State Championship in the 3,000-meter event, held this past March. Bucknell's men's and women's cross country teams return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 20, competing with split squads in the Buffalo Stampede in Buffalo, N.Y., and the Dickinson Long-Short Course Invitational in Carlisle, Pa.
