Bucknell's Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Split for Saturday

Sept. 19, 2008

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's men's and women's cross country teams will take part in two races this weekend, the Buffalo Stampede in Buffalo, N.Y., and the Dickinson Long-Short Course Invitational in Carlisle, Pa. Both the men's and women's teams will compete at both events, with some members of the Bison traveling to Buffalo, while the others will be in Carlisle.

On Monday, the Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Rankings preseason polls were released, as voted on by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. A national poll is conducted, along with rankings for nine different regions across the country. Bucknell's men's cross country team was listed No. 11 in the Mid-Atlantic region, while the women's cross country squad was voted No. 13.

Patriot League schools highlighted both the men's and women's preseason polls. Men's teams from Navy (No. 5), American (No. 6) and Lehigh (No. 13) placed with Bucknell in the Mid-Atlantic region, while Navy (No. 9) also placed on the women's side. The Army men placed No. 11 in the Northeast region, while the Colgate women also ranked No. 11 in the Northeast.

Buffalo Stampede

The University at Buffalo hosts this annual event, which features a 5K run for the women and an 8K for the men. The Bulls men's team won the race in 2007, while the women's contingent placed second behind Colgate. The individual women's champion was Mary Veith, now a senior at the University at Buffalo.

Other top teams competing include Akron, whose women's team is ranked No. 5 in the Great Lakes region, and Binghamton, whose men's and women's teams rank No. 14 and No. 13, respectively, in the Northeast. Robert Morris and the Rochester Institute of Technology will also send teams, as well Daemen, Erie Community College, Hilbert, Medaille, Niagara and the UB running club. Colgate's women's team is expected to attempt to defend its title.

Dickinson Long-Short Course Invitational

There will be two races for the men's team and two for the women's squad at this meet. The women's races will be a 4K and a 6K, with the top three finishers for each school scoring. The scores from the two races are then combined for a team score. The men's results are recorded similarly, except the races are 4K and 8K.

In addition to Bucknell and Dickinson, 24 other teams will be competing at this meet. Participants include Carnegie Mellon, a Dickinson alumni team, Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins, Lebanon Valley, Millersville, Muhlenberg, Shippensburg, Washington & Jefferson, West Chester and Widener. Washington and Lee will only be competing in the men's race, while Chatham will only be sending a women's team.

Up Next

The Bison cross country teams will next compete on Friday, Oct. 3, at the Paul Short Memorial Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. Bethlehem is also the site of this year's Patriot League Championships, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1.
