LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Bucknell Bison softball team (10-25, 2-10 PL) lost 9-5 to the Boston University Terriers (36-7, 9-0 PL) in the final game of the series. The Bison bats scored five runs but the Terriers used timely hitting to grab the early lead and maintain distance for the entire contest.
Recap
Savannah Jones started in the circle for the Bison.
Boston scored first to set the tone for the game. With two outs, a single to right field and a triple to right-center plated the 1-0 lead for the Terriers. A walk and a stolen base followed, but Jones prevented more damage by inducing a groundout.
The Bison had a chance to counter in their frame of the first inning when MaKenzie Hilling walked and Zoie Smith singled. But a lineout and a grounder ended the chance.
The Terriers added three runs in the second inning. A double and two singles scored a run. Hunter Vestal entered the circle in relief and yielded a triple that tallied two more runs for a 4-0 Boston advantage.
Nine straight batters were retired for both teams until Boston struck three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. A single and a failed pickoff attempt placed a runner on second. Another single scored the runner and an error allowed the batter to advance to second base. The runner then stole third. A double made it 6-0 and chased Vestal from the circle. Kaiya Burton entered the game in relief. An error by Lorberter at second allowed the third run to score. Burton escaped the inning but Boston had a 7-0 lead.
Bucknell struck back for two runs in their frame. Smith singled and Jones sacrificed her to second base. Chase Knapp drove Smith in with an RBI triple to right-center field. Kailyn Lorberter hit a pop-up just beyond the infield dirt. As the second baseman caught it with her back to the play, Knapp broke for home and slid under the tag. A Noelle Gardon grounder ended the inning but Bucknell was on the scoreboard.
Boston added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. A walk and triple scored the first run. A single followed the three-bagger for the 9-2 lead. Zoie Smith flashed her strong arm by gunning down a would-be base stealer and a grounder to Burton ended the frame.
The Orange & Blue counterattacked in their sixth inning frame. Hilling led off with a single and Smith walked. Jones drove a laser to the wall in left-center field. The double scored both runners. Jones advanced to third on a passed ball which allowed a single from Lorberter to score her. Two outs followed but Bucknell cut the deficit to 9-5.
With two outs, Hilling hit a double in the bottom of the seventh inning but the game ended with Smith called out looking on a low strike three.
